I'm probably a little late to the party in talking about this, but Seth Godin's Education Manifesto, "Stop Stealing Dreams," is a must-read!
I'm sure you've got at least one blog or website you visit daily. One of mine is Seth Godin's blog. How is this guy always so spot on? Sure enough, he's done it again with Stop Stealing Dreams. It's not rocket science, but as usual, his points are argued so well it'd be challenging to disagree with any validity.
Seth begins by describing the premise of education and why it came to be a staple of life in the U.S. Ultimately, it was instituted to create compliant factor workers who would buy what was marketed to them. And in fact, it was very successful at doing just that.
However, the needs of our world and economy have changed. We don't need compliant factor workers - we have computers and automated machines for a huge percentage of that type of work. What we need are dreamers who are passionate, leaders, curious and most importantly, have a life-long love of learning.
I'm confident you'll agree if you read this free 30,000 word manifesto. Or if you don't agree, please come back here and comment.
Regardless of whether you're a teacher or ever want to be, this is something that affects us all in one way or another. It's well worth your time.

(I read the kindle version on my iPad and recommend that vs. reading off your desktop or printing.)
